Book Summary: Fast Reading by Atsushi Innan

CN: 快速阅读术 (印南敦史)

What is "Flow reading": Let the content of the book flow through your mind, as long as it flows, it always has some meanings.
- the meaning of reading is not 100% copying of the text, but encountering 1% harvest

How to get the habit of reading 20 books per month:
  • Step 1: read at the same time everyday
  • Step 2: choose "fast-readable" books first:
    • fewer book-through clues, and more independent charpters (v.s. no-need-to-read books, not-fast-readable books)
    • ratio of fast-readable v.s. not-fast-readable books: 9:1
    • duration: 60min, 30 min for fast-readable, and 30 for not-fast readable
  • Step 3: Books for reading today should be different from yesterday
    • Spend no  more than 10 days for one book. If need much time to read, get another fast-readable book at the same time.
    • Try finishing one book every day. Let the content of different books flow through your mind. that's the basic model of flow-reading
    • Use alarm. E.g. if you get up at 7am, set alarm at 6:49am, start reading at 6:50am, finish reading at 7:00am.
How to preserve the reading experience
  • Write as well as read. Fast and deep reading starts with making excerpts.
  • Breathe-reading
    • Step 1: one-line excerpt, Excerpt the best content of the book.
      • Write down, insteading of memorize, the touching paragraphs.
      • Excerpt while reading
      • Use A4 paper to make excerpts any time. If something you want to memorize, write it down. Include the page number at the begining, follow by the content. While making the excerpts, better not copying the whole paragraphy, but try shortening it as much as possible, within several lines.
    • Step 2: one-line essence. The best line.
      • Review the collection of the excerpts that you make during reading, and select the best line of all.
    • Step 3: one-line comment. Review why that line create resonance with you. Use this comment to revoke your memory of the book in the future.
      • Use another book to record the one-line essence and one-line comment. Include the date, book name, author, followed  by one-line essence and then one-line comment of 30-40 phrases.
    • Step 4: review your reading footprint
      • You will have a new view on yourself after finishing every 12 book. Regularly reveiw your excerpts and comments.
      • While reviewing your comments, think about the following questions:
      • What kind of books can generate your resonance?
      • What kind of opinions do you appreciate?
      • What kind of books do you want to read more in the future?
      • Select the best: select the best of the 12 books, and by the year end, select one as the best of the best.
      • Handwriting is better, because 1) deep understanding 2) make us excerpt only the most needed 3) easier to view the results
The right reading approach in the era of "not-owning"

  • Distinguish the necessaries and unnecessaries, and only read the necessaries.
    • Avoid "thorough-searching" reading
    • Basic concept is: use the titles and subtiles to decide if it worths reading. It will help us to choose the book conent, and select the key content fast, and discard what you don't need.
  • Techniques for flow-reading
    • 3 marks for content to skip:
      • author's self statement to distinguish the book from other of same kind
      • the special events, experiences used to prove the theories or allegations (usually the order is theory-story-theory summary)
      • the execessive expression to increase the expection or crisis mood.
    • 4 steps to increase the reading speed:
      • step 1: read carefully the preface and tables of content
      • step 2: only read the first and last 5 lines. Once you know the structure of the titles, you can decide which to skip
        • a book usually use the structure of Chapter - Section - Paragraph
        • for business or some best-selling books, the explanary content ususally follow the structure:
          • 1. beginging, give a topic or point of view
          • 2. middle: use exampls to prove the opinion
          • 3. ending: summary and re-confirm the topic/opinion
        • after reading the first and last 5 lines, you can already decide if you need to read. If you find it is important to read, you can just go back to read the whole part. This way you can save your time in reading non-core content for you, as well as miss the valuable content
      • step 3: discover your needs, and decide the key word before reading.
        • know what you want. read fast the part that is not quite relevant. The part with "key word" can be the source for one-line excerption
      • step 4: use different reading speed. For  example, if you find some part with the key words, you can intentionally slow down the reading speed.
Secrete for unforgetable reading: not memory-oriented reading
  • forget because you want to remember. note down instead of memorize.
  • follow the steps of one-line excerption, one-line essence, and one-line comment
Techniques for select and manage books
Once mass reading becomes a habit, new problems will arise:
                1. how to choose books to read
                2. how to get the books
                3. how to manage the finished books

Approaches to read more:
    1. Make weekly plan
  • 6 books/week, 25 books/month, 300 books/year. get into the mass reading life status
  • fix a week day to be free day. Use the free day to make make weekly plan for next week.
    2. break the barrier of interests, increase books you would like
  • include 1~2 books you don't want much. If you only choose the books you like, your readings would be very similar.
  • No need to be very selective on the books recommended by others. Recommending and getting recommendation can make reading meaningful
    3. Use the free day to read not-fast-readbable books
  • content is about fact and allegation (business, some new books, etc.) - books for self improvement, can be fast-readable
  • content is about story, plot (novals, prose, etc.) - for mind amusement, can read slow
    4. be open to the source of books, like library, second-hand bookstores. bookstores sells by popularity

    5. giving away non-essential books can make you like books more. Let your bookshelve by your mirror.
  • order the books by publication date, from old to new
  • Order your bookshelf once every three months, because:
    • there are unneeded books even within 3 monthes
    • books that are 3 months ago are not new books any longer
    • books kept before are not necessarily need to be kept now
